A Reformulation of Rule 2 of Centering Theory

چکیده
We argue that it is a mistake to define a total preference ordering on the well-known centering transitions CONTINUE, RETAIN, SHIFT and that they are in fact epiphenomenal; a partial ordering emerges from the interaction between cohesion (maintaining the same center) and salience (realising the center as Subject). We propose a new formulation of Rule 2 of centering theory incorporating these principles as well as a streamlined version of Strube and Hahn’s notion of cheapness.

A Reformulation of Rule 2 of Centering Theor
The standard preference ordering on the well-known centering transitions Continue, Retain, Shift is argued to be unmotivated: a partial, context-dependent ordering emerges from the interaction between principles dubbed cohesion (maintaining the same center of attention) and salience (realizing the center of attention as the most prominent NP). A new formulation of Rule 2 of centering theory is ...
متن کاملA Corpus Study of Zero Pronouns in Hindi: An Account Based on Centering Transition Preferences
This paper presents a corpus-based investigation of the use of zero pronouns in Hindi. After establishing that the antecedents of these null arguments cannot be recovered syntactically (Rizzi, 1982; Jaeggli & Safir, 1989), I propose an account in terms of "Centering Theory" (Grosz et al., 1995). Given the Hindi-specific centering constraints proposed in Prasad & Strube (2000), I argue that the ...
متن کاملOptimizing Referential Coherence in Text Generation
This article describes an implemented system which uses centering theory for planning of coherent texts and choice of referring expressions. We argue that text and sentence planning need to be driven in part by the goal of maintaining referential continuity and thereby facilitating pronoun resolution: Obtaining a favorable ordering of clauses, and of arguments within clauses, is likely to incre...
متن کاملCorrelation of Viscosity of Aqueous Solutions of Alkanolamine Mixtures Based on the Eyring's Theory and Wong-Sandler Mixing Rule
A viscosity model, based on Eyring’s absolute rate theory combined with a cubic PR equation of state and Wong-Sandler mixing rule, has been proposed in order to correlate viscosities of aqueous solutions of alkanolamine mixtures at atmospheric pressure and different temperatures. In the proposed method, the energy and size parameters in studied Equation of State (EoS) have been obtained usi...
متن کاملPost-Tensioned Steel Connections Self-Centering Behavior Using the Finite Element Method
Due to lack of the proper and well behavior of steel moment-resisting connections subjected to the great and major earthquakes, excessive researches have been conducted to mitigate the damages on the primary elements and connections. Therefore, elimination of residual drift and increasing the plastic rotation capacity for the connectors in the panel zone are required. The main purpose of this s...
